The Green & Gold
The Newsletter Of New Milton Cricket Club
Through The Teams
The first full programme of the season brought success for the Colts teams and the lower senior sides, but mixed performances from the Club’s First and Second X1s.
First Blood
First out the blocks were the U13A ( 107 -5 ) who beat their Bashley counterparts ( 59 -6 ) last Thursday. Ollie Nicholls ( 30 ret ) and Toby Edwards (26) led the way with the bat. They were backed up by excellent work from all the New Milton bowlers who kept the opposition in check at all times.
Bowlers On Top
On Saturday the First X1 bowled and fielded exceptionally well to dismiss a powerful Burridge line up for 129 in Southern Premier Division 2. Headline grabbers were Dan Loader ( 4-22 ) and skipper Ryan Beck ( 3-12 ) but in truth the achievement belonged to all the bowlers and the fielders who performed to very high standards throughout. The batting was less distinguished with the side unable to get to grips with the visitors bowling, and ultimately folding for 46.
Battling Performance By the 2nds
The 2nd X1 ( 173-9 ) also lost but in a much more keenly contested match against Basingstoke & North Hants ( 174-4 ). New Milton endured the worst of the batting conditions but were boosted by battling knocks from skipper Pete Wakefield (61) and Richard Wilson (31). Our bowlers were never quite able to make the breakthrough as a couple of crucial catches were put down.
‘Pistol’ Fires For The Threes.
Skipper ‘Pistol’ Pete Johnson ( 76 ) led from the front as the 3rds ( 203-5 ) came out on top against Bashley ( 198-6 ). Pete was well supported by Dave Crossley. Jim Metcalfe chipped in valuably with both bat and ball, but it was young wicketkeeper Will Crossley who took the fielding plaudits turning in an excellent performance in his first senior game.
Mills Is Lord of The Manor
Young leggie David Mills ( 5-18 ) wove his magic to see the 4th X1 ( 175-3 ) home against Langley Manor ( 114 ). The New Milton total was built around contributions from the ever reliable Tony Jones, and Will Freeman, but mainly a fine innings from Andy Soffe ( 63 ).
A Win For the Under 11s
The U11s ( 255 ) got off the mark with a win against Sway ( 235 ). In a good all round team performance Tim Nurse and Chris Ogborne chipped in well with the bat. Alex Mills showed his enthusiasm when bowling and fielding.
Under 15s Just Miss Out
The 15s ( 86-6 ) will have taken plenty of positives from this game although they left their ‘charge’ a bit late to overhaul Langley Manor. Fine bowling by Will Thompson ( 2-7 ), Ellis Day ( 2-19), and Todd Clarke ( 1-12 ) restricted the visitors to 99 – 7. The New Milton response was built on a sound platform laid by the impressive openers Andy Case ( 12 ) and Richard Vallis (14 ). Grant Jenkins ( 14 no ) held the middle order together while Todd Clarke ( 21 ) took the attack to the bowlers but in the end came up just short.
Well Done Charlotte, George and Will
Charlotte Taylor enjoyed another good day for Hampshire U15 Girls on Sunday, scoring 20, and bowling four overs for only ten runs as her team beat Oxfordshire convincingly.
Congratulations to George Watts and Will Crossley who have been selected for the Hampshire U12 squad for the coming season.
Chairman Looks Forward
Steve Taylor, Club Chairman, is looking forward to a fulfilling season for all teams, players, and supporters, telling the Green & Gold ‘ We are well set for an enjoyable season at all levels. The long term weather forecast looks good. The ground and facilities are in excellent condition thanks to the efforts of Andy Beck, our Groundsman, and all those members who put hard hours into refurbishing the Clubhouse. The Colts squads are filling up and the young players are working hard with their coaches.
With regard to the Colts, I would like to say a particular word of appreciation for the support given by the young players’ parents. We are a local Club. We have to homegrow our players. Virtually all of the players in our senior teams have come up through our own development system. Parent support is a critical factor in making all this happen, and the Club is very grateful for it’.
Through The Teams
Of the Senior teams only the First X1 was in action last weekend, suffering a narrow defeat against Havant 2nds in Southern Premier Division 2. The New Milton bowlers put in a good stint to keep Havant in check, and a total of 200 looked well within reach as New Milton cruised to 60 without loss in 12 overs. However, uncertainty against the Havant spin bowlers gradually undermined the Club’s response which ultimately petered out 30 runs short with overs in hand. Man of the match for New Milton was Nick Gargaro who took 1 – 26 off ten overs and hit a forceful 32 at the top of the batting order.
Welcome To Walt – The man who never sleeps ……..
New Milton CC extends a warm welcome to Wieghardt Van Der Walt who has paid his own way to the UK to get a taste of English Club Cricket. Immediately nicknamed ‘Walt’ by his New Milton team mates, who generally communicate in words of one syllable, he was introduced to the Club by Southern League sage, Mike Vimpany. ‘Walt’, from George near Capetown, who is on his first visit to the UK, arrived on Friday evening with no sleep for 36 hours due to postponed fights and was pitched straight into the Havant match ! Sure be a popular figure, around the Club for the next five months ‘Walt’ will be looking forward to some well earned kip.
Colts Review
Under 11A ( 268 – 4 ) kicked off with a win against Mudeford ( 245 – 4 ) on Sunday. Other teams suffered the frustration of games being cancelled due to the opposition not being able to raise sides.
Congratulations to Charlotte Taylor who has been selected for Hampshire U15 Girls. Playing against Sussex last weekend Charlotte took 1 – 10 in a thrilling match which ended in a tie.
The Club hopes to have more good news to report soon about players who are currently in contention for places in County and District squads.
